Intersting NYT article on the treatment of Legal and Illegal Immigrants in Hospitals Across the Country

Hey PRIMErs,

I found this article on the New York Times homepage today (11/8/08) and thought it would be a great read for those (I should say all) of you that are following the blog. Good luck studying! :-).

P.S. The article is long, but each anecdotal example is less than a page, so it would be worth it to take a glance at at least a few of the patient examples.

  1. A friend of mine sent me this article yesterday. Many of the ideas in it express the underlying balance between humane treatment and rising costs that seems to taint every discussion related to immigrant health care. I particularly like this article because it explores the question which many Americans seem to have-why don't we just send them back to their home country? It turns out that repatriation is difficult, risky, and riddled with uncooperative behavior between the countries involved. I can only imagine the difficulty in repatriating a patient back to China, after he has broken laws which their country has set in place.
